IPAEA Condemns Brutal Attack on Press Freedom in Kenya

Thursday 8th August

The International Press Association is deeply disturbed and appalled by the attacks on journalists during the NaneNaneMarch protests in Kenya. The targeting and injuring of several media professionals, including those from international outlets like Al Jazeera, CNN, and AFP, as well as local media, is a blatant violation of press freedom and a grave threat to the public's right to information.

A journalist at the nationwide media protests that happened in Kenya demanding for press freedom, safety and security of journalists, an end to media censorship and the prosecution of violent police.

The deliberate attack of journalists by police officers is unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest terms. Such acts of violence not only endanger the lives of media workers but also create a climate of fear that stifles critical reporting and accountability.

Journalists must be able to carry out their duties without fear of harm or intimidation. We stand in solidarity with our colleagues who have been injured and offer our unwavering support.

We urge the government of Kenya to respect the fundamental right to freedom of expression and ensure the safety of journalists while carrying out their duties.
